Module

Reducing Violence in Schools

Author: Jim Kessler and Nikki Yamashiro
In The Culture Program

Abstract

This module proposes an early intervention school violence prevention strategy aimed at “tweens” to effectively reach the teens and help reduce violence in schools.

Description

Violence – in the form of bullying, fighting and assault – remains a stubborn problem in our schools. However, recent studies reveal that early detection and effective intervention can significantly reduce violence and improve classroom performance in both the short and long term. An early intervention school violence prevention strategy aimed at “tweens” will effectively reach the teens to help schools and teachers address and reduce school violence. This module lays out the problems of the pervasiveness of school violence, the effects of school violence on academic performance and existing school violence prevention strategies that are effective but barely funded; outlines the components of an early intervention school violence prevention strategy; and provides suggestions to roll out your plan to the public.
